Monday marks U.S. President Donald Trump’s inauguration where foreign leaders are invited to attend the American tradition. However, Justin Trudeau did not receive an invite and instead is scheduled to attend yet another Liberal cabinet retreat.
Many world leaders were invited to attend the historic event, such as Argentina’s Javier Millei, China’s Xi Jingping of China (who sent Vice President Han Zheng to attend, a trusted adviser).
Trudeau’s absence is notable and comes amid a looming tariff threat from President Trump. The lack of an invitation to Trudeau can likely be associated with the rift between Trudeau and Trump. The 45th and 47th U.S. President has mocked Trudeau’s leadership and questioned Canada’s independence, floating the idea of merging the two states in an unprecedented fashion.
Meanwhile, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is attending the inauguration on Capitol Hill while meeting with governors and figure heads in the incoming administration. Smith hopes to highlight Alberta’s important role in providing the U.S. energy and economic security.
Liberal Premier of NewFoundland and Labrador, Andrew Furey also said that he would attend the inauguration in Washington D.C. but told CTV news that his visit is “in no way an endorsement of Trump”.
Former US Presidents, senators, and business leaders like Dana White and Muck Zuckerberg were also in attendance on Monday.
