The Alberta Powerlifting Union (APU) has updated its 2023 records that includes two biological men holding provincial records — one of whom mock-identified as a woman to make a political statement.
Last year, Albertan male powerlifter Avi Silverberg identified as female seconds before smashing the women’s record. The record was previously held by a trans-identified biological male Anne Andres, who was present during the record-breaking feat.
Silverberg, head coach of Team Canada Powerlifting, did the stunt to protest the trans-inclusive policy.
Despite being aware that Silverberg was making a political statement, the APU has updated its 2023 Women’s Rankings by including Silverberg at the top of the list.
Andres is also at the top of the list in the Women’s Rankings Open category.
Last week, Andres has released a scathing post on social media, wishing for a female competitor to die a painful death before suffering eternally in the pits of hell.
The competitor in question, April Hutchinson, has called for Andres to be removed from the women’s division because Andres is a biological man.
Hutchinson, who last month filed a police report alleging Andres made threats towards her, has also promoted a petition that calls for Andres to be banned by the Canadian Powerlifting Union (CPU).
The petition alleges that Andres has violated the CPU’s Code of Conduct “for their egregious behaviour.”
The CPU recently banned Hutchinson from competing in the sport after she called Andres a biological man on the Piers Morgan show.
Alberta Premier Smith recently announced new transgender-related policies, one of which includes a plan to convince sporting unions to stop allowing biological men to compete against women.
