The federal Conservatives’ communications team has caught CTV splicing up a statement made by leader Pierre Poilievre and misrepresenting his pending non-confidence motion.
The Conservatives’ Director of Media relations, Sebastian Skamski, revealed the network spliced together words Poilievre said in separate sentences to make it look like he said them in one sentence.
Moreover, the spliced video was deceptively placed directly after an unrelated clip about the NDP-Liberals’ national dental care plan, making it look like Poilievre was proposing his non-confidence motion because of it, when in reality Poilievre was commenting on the carbon tax.
“Not only is @PierrePoilievre’s quote clearly about the carbon tax (cut from CTV’s broadcast), @CTVNews bizarrely manipulated it. Real quote: ‘That’s why it’s time to put forward a motion for a carbon tax election.’ CTV fabrication: ‘That’s why we need to put forward a motion.’
Skamski penned an open letter to CTV, noting their flagrant editing and misrepresentation of Poilievre’s motion.
Poilievre has announced he will be proposing a non-confidence motion in the House of Commons as early as Tuesday, which is not expected to pass, as the NDP and Bloc Quebecois have indicated they will vote against it.
Last year, CTV accidentally said live on air during Alberta’s election that they wished the NDP had been victorious instead of the UCP’s Danielle Smith.
