Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wants to appoint a Liberal bureaucrat to censor what Canadians are posting online.
Ahead of an anticipated election, the Liberals are doing everything they can to rig the playing field in their favour, including an unprecedented assault on our Charter free speech rights.
How will Trudeau accomplish this? By creating a draconian “Digital Safety Commission”. The commission which the Trudeau government just announced, will add numerous positions including a Digital Safety Commissioner, a Digital Resource Council, and an advisory board.
The governing Liberals have consistently fought against opposition voices from having access to Canadian ears throughout their time in office, clearly believing that Canadians need a big brother figure to watch over their lives and thoughts.
Under the guise of protecting people from supposed “online hate,” unelected bureaucrats will get to order platforms like Twitter and Facebook to censor content Trudeau’s office doesn’t like.
Additionally, the companies will only have 24 hours to do the government’s bidding or face potential consequences including entirely shutting down access to a social media platform for the crime of refusing to obey the government.
The proposed commission was first introduced on Thursday in a government press release on a public consultation.
According to a technical paper on the commission, the Digital Safety Commissioner will be able to require any platform to “do any act or thing, or refrain from doing anything necessary to ensure compliance with any obligations imposed on the [Platform] by or under the Act within the time specified in the order.”
While the bill outlining these proposals has yet to be tabled until the fall, the federal government has already introduced two bills that infringe on Canadians’ free speech rights, Bill C-10 and Bill C-36.
Both bills have been blasted by free speech advocates and constitutional groups as authoritarian and infringing on freedom of expression.
