In a series of tweets, J.K. Rowling went scorched earth and criticized her home country’s new Hate Crime and Public Order Bill that came into effect on Monday, which she said places a higher value on the feelings of “men performing their idea of femaleness” than on the rights and freedoms of actual women and girls.
Scotland’s new hate crime bill expands the criminality of race-based words that can stir up hatred, to include anything with “prejudice towards characteristics including age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity and variations in sex characteristics.”
Rowling’s 11-post thread on X highlights several cases of biological males who have identified as women, some with histories of violence or sexual offenses against women, and argues that the new legislation in Scotland could be abused by “activists who wish to silence those of us speaking out about the dangers of eliminating women’s and girls’ single-sex spaces.”
She contends that the redefinition of “woman” to include every man who declares himself one has already had serious consequences for women’s and girls’ rights and safety in Scotland, particularly for vulnerable populations like female prisoners and rape survivors.
The creator of Harry Potter further said that accurately describing biological sex should not be considered a criminal offense, warning that freedom of speech and belief are at risk in Scotland if it’s deemed criminal.
Rowling finishes her thread by asking if her posts qualify as an offense under the new act, joking that she looks forward to being arrested upon her return to Scotland, the “birthplace of the Scottish Enlightenment.”
J.K. Rowling Drags Liberal Show in Canadian Parliament
Last year, male Canadian MPs who paraded around in high heels to support women were mocked by JW Rowling among a number of international figures.
Video emerged of Liberal MPs wearing pink high heels and sashaying around their office. The gesture has been a sign of showing support for women, despite the fact the Liberals can’t define what a woman is.
“Keep us posted on how many femicides this prevented,” Rowling said in response.
The women’s rights advocate Rowling has found the spotlight a few times for noting how ‘trans-rights’ seem to come at the expense of women.
