A Canadian talk show host has been booted from the streaming network OUTtv after expressing support for Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s new transgender policies.
David Oulton, the host of “Face to Face With David,” was informed of his cancellation on February 7th by OUTtv, a subscription-based service with LGBT focused programming.
Oulton, who openly identifies as a gay man, had posted that he was pleased with the United Conservative Party’s (UCP) policy announcements, even attaching a picture of his meeting with Premier Smith.
Smith’s policy plans to restrict trans women from women’s sports, prohibit hormone treatments for minors under 16 who think they are transgender, and enhance parental control over education regarding pronouns and gender identity instruction.
Oulton told The Counter Signal that after expressing his support for Smith’s policies, he “began to receive some very nasty commentary from within the LGBTQ+ community, and a lot of them made reference to the network.” Some social media users threatened to cancel their subscriptions with OUTtv unless they dropped him.
Oulton later emailed OUTtv to provide extra context for the network to consider while it was getting bombarded by trans activists calling for his cancellation. Instead of respecting Oulton’s viewpoint, the network responded to Oulton by letting him know that they dropped his show.
Oulton called the situation “an unfortunate reality,” and said that while he understands OUTtv was simply making a business decision, “It points to a larger problem in society and around cancel culture.”
In his show, Oulton interviews celebrities and politicians, while discussing a variety of topics such as business, politics, and entertainment.
Despite losing his platform on the streaming service, Oulton said he stands by his views and support of Smith’s transgender-related policies.
The not-so-inclusive “LGBT community”
Oulton’s cancellation comes after he was invited by the Minister of Arts, Culture, and Status of Women, Tanya Fir, to attend a roundtable discussion on the proposed trans-related policies.
In response to his cancellation, Fir’s press secretary Garrett Koehler told The Counter Signal that “everyone should be free to share their opinions without fear of being canceled or their employment terminated.”
Koehler added: “This is yet another example of how the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community is not uniform in their thoughts and beliefs, rather there’s variety in their political and social beliefs.”
“Coming out as a UCP supporter has been more challenging than coming out as gay”
Oulton further noted that the left is supposed to be a community built on free thought and expression, but he said it’s not welcoming to those who hold more conservative views.
“Coming out as a UCP supporter has been more challenging than coming out as gay,” he said.
Oulton said that multiple members of the LGBTQ+ community have threatened him for supporting parental rights, including making threats towards his dog.
“I’ve said it’s like the rainbow mafia coming after me,” he said, “trans activists and drag queens post online, calling me derogatory slurs.”
“Face to Face With David” is still available on Corus owned stations in Canada such as The Oprah Winfrey Network, Slice, and Lifetime. It also streams on Tubi and Apple TV.
