Even before the results are announced, the mainstream media is in overdrive trying to disparage veteran Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre, who is expected to be crowned leader of the federal Conservative party tonight.
“I’m struck today by how Pierre Poilievre will likely emerge leader tonight after campaigning to defund the CBC, while the public broadcaster shows us (and during times like these) precisely why it is valuable,” tweeted Althia Raj, a panellist for the CBC and a Toronto Star columnist.
The Toronto Star has also joined the Poilievre bashing, associating him with “deplorable” voters — the infamous line former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton once used to refer to Republican voters.
Another Friday article from Star framed Poilievre as trying to “steal the labour vote.”
Meanwhile, the left-leaning media The Globe and Mail ran a piece titled “The polarizing Pierre Poilievre.”
In another piece, state broadcaster CBC News highlighted people who think Pierre is “too extreme.”
The Conservative party will announce its new leader at an event in Ottawa following a months-long leadership campaign. Many observers expect a coronation of Poilievre, who’s been leading in the polls and is likely to win on the first ballot.
The party sent out 678,000 ballots to Conservatives across the country. Poilievre sold nearly 312,000 memberships. He also received an endorsement from former Conservative MP Stephen Harper.
Poilievre also has more Twitter followers than former Conservative leaders Andrew Scheer and Erin O’Toole combined, indicating his popularity with voters on social media. It also suggests he might finally be a Conservative leader who can form government.
True North is hosting a live show to cover and discuss the event for those looking to escape the gross anti-conservative bias in mainstream media coverage.
