Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek received a resounding chorus of boos while being introduced at the Calgary Flames home game Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Gondek was the last of four individuals introduced for the ceremonial puck drop on South Asian Celebration Night, and the only one to receive a negative response from the crowd.
The screaming boos can be heard loud and clear while Gondek walked on the red carpet to center ice.
The timing of Gondek’s unwelcomed reception in her own city comes while an active petition to have her removed from power is in its final days of collecting signatures.
Calgary would need a total of 514,284 signatures for the petition to successfully recall Mayor Gondek, however only 390, 383 citizens voted in the 2021 mayoral election, so there’s virtually no chance the petition is successful in actually removing the mayor from power.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith recently called the Gondek recall legislation “unfair,” saying “too high of a bar” is set for petitioners to gather all the needed signatures.
