Video from the Canadian Independent reveals students at an Ontario high school ripping down the Pride flag from the flagpole, leaving just the Canadian one up.
At Ontario’s Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School in London, a group of students can be seen cheering on their peer to rip the Pride flag down.
“Put it in the garbage! Put it in the garbage!” one yelled.
London Ontario has a notable Muslim population.
On May 17, over 400 children were kept home by parents from Eagle Heights Elementary School in London, Ontario, while the school celebrated another Pride day known as the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
The school board gave no official explanation for the mass absence other than saying it was a “miscommunication.”
Additionally, a source told The London Free Press that Arthur Ford public school had 375 absences, and Wilfrid Jury had 300 on the same day.
On Tuesday, a teacher in an Edmonton school was caught on a hot mic telling a Muslim student he’s not welcome in Canada unless he respects everything that Pride stands for.
“You are out to lunch if you think it is unacceptable to not show up because you think there are some Pride activities going on at the school,”the teacher said to the student.
The teacher further suggested that her not being racist was contingent on the student respecting Pride.
“It goes two ways. If you want to be respected for who you are, if you don’t want to suffer prejudice for your religion, your colour of skin … then you better give it back for people who are different than you. That’s how it works. It’s an exchange.”
She added, “We believe in freedom, we believe people can marry whoever they want. That is in the law … if you don’t think that should be the law, you can’t be Canadian, you don’t belong here. I mean it.”
